How to turn a photo into a coloring page

The converter above draws a black line wherever the brightness of your photo changes sharply, then cleans the result up for printing. Five steps:

  1. Pick a photo with one clear subject. A pet, a face, a house, a flower or a toy that fills most of the frame, in daylight, against a plain background. Crop close in your photo app first.
  2. Choose it, or drop it on the page preview. JPEG, PNG or WebP up to 20 MB. A wide photo switches the page to landscape and a tall one back to portrait; you can change it afterwards.
  3. Set Detail. Move it until the main outlines are all there but the page is not crowded. The status line warns when more than 18% of the page is ink, which is too dense to color.
  4. Simplify. Raise Smoothing to turn fur, grass and hair into larger shapes, and Clean up specks to remove dots from noise. Press Compare with photo and drag the slider to check nothing important went missing.
  5. Finish and print. Pick a line weight (Bold for crayons), a border and an optional caption such as a name, then Download PDF and print at 100% / Actual size. The PNG is for putting the page into another document or a drawing app.

Settings by subject

Starting points, not rules: every photo is different, and the preview updates as you move a slider.

Pets45–6034–5MediumFur turns into hundreds of short lines at high Detail; a plain floor or wall behind the pet helps most.
Faces and portraits55–7023Fine or MediumSide light draws shadow lines across the face. Use a photo taken facing a window.
Buildings, cars, toys60–751–23MediumStraight edges convert cleanly; skies with clouds add loose shapes, so crop them out.
Flowers and plants50–652–34MediumOne bloom close up works better than a whole flower bed.

What this converter does, and what it does not

It follows your photo

Lines come from the photo itself, so the page keeps the real shape of your dog, your house or your child's face. Nothing is redrawn or invented, and the same photo and settings always give the same page.

It does not use AI

AI coloring page generators send your photo to a server and redraw it as a cartoon. That can look cleaner, but needs an upload and usually an account. Here the conversion is an edge-finding filter that runs in your browser, so the photo never leaves your device.

It cannot fix a busy photo

It does not remove backgrounds or join outlines that are missing in the photo: a white cat on snow loses its edge, and a cluttered room becomes clutter. Choose or crop the photo first; that matters more than any slider.

Printing and paper advice is on the generator page. To make pages without a photo, try the mandala coloring page generator.

Questions

Is it free?

Yes. There is no account, no sign-up, no limit on pages and no watermark.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The photo is decoded and converted by your browser on this device. The site has no upload endpoint, and the photo is not saved: reloading or closing the page discards it. Only your slider settings are remembered.

Why does my page have broken lines or lots of dots?

Broken lines appear where the photo has little contrast, such as a light subject on a light background; raise Detail or choose a photo with a darker background. Dots come from noise in dark or grainy photos; raise Clean up specks and Smoothing.

Can I color the page on a tablet?

Yes. Download the PNG and open it in a drawing app that can import images. Fill tools work best with the Bold line weight, which leaves fewer gaps in the outlines.

Can I put several photos into one PDF?

Not at the moment: photo pages are made one at a time, one PDF each. Pattern pages can be combined into a coloring book PDF of 5, 10 or 20 pages.
